Blue bin recycling: Give your items a second life

Your blue bin is one of the easiest ways to help keep Los Angeles clean and sustainable. By sorting your glass, plastic, metal, and paper, you're helping to turn old materials into something new!

Is this service for me?
If you live in a single-family home or a small apartment building (4 units or fewer), LASAN provides your weekly Blue Bin collection.

What goes in the blue bin?

To ensure your items can be recycled, please make sure they are empty, clean, and dry.

  • Paper & Cardboard: Junk mail, newspapers, cereal boxes, and flattened delivery boxes.
  • Plastics 1, 2, and 5: Clean plastic bottles, jugs, and tubs (like yogurt or margarine containers).
  • Glass: Bottles and jars (any color).
  • Metal: Aluminum cans, tin cans, and clean foil.

What stays out?
Putting the wrong things in the Blue Bin can ruin a whole truckload of recycling. Please keep these out:

  • Food & Liquids: These belong in the Green Bin or Black Bin.
  • "Tanglers": Garden hoses, holiday lights, and wires can break our sorting machines.
  • Household Hazardous Waste (HHW): Batteries, light bulbs, and chemicals. Please take these to a S.A.F.E. Center
  • Oversized Items: Tires and mattresses aren't for the bin. You can schedule a free curbside bulky item collection for these!.
