To help stop litter before it hits our streets, sidewalks, and storm drains, LASAN maintains thousands of public trash cans throughout our diverse neighborhoods. These street-side bins give pedestrians, commuters, and visitors a convenient place to toss their trash while on the go. By strategically managing these assets, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to keep our shared public spaces clean, safe, and welcoming.
Smarter Maintenance Through our Master Inventory
We don't just put out trash cans and forget about them. LASAN maintains a comprehensive, modern inventory of every public sidewalk bin across the City of Los Angeles, even those that are not owned and maintained by the City. This master database also allows us to monitor the physical condition of our own bins, track how quickly they fill up, and schedule precise collection routes.
By pairing this inventory with CleanStat - our quarterly data-indexing system that maps street cleanliness across the city - we can see exactly where trash cans are working well and where adjustments are needed. To date, this system has helped us successfully place and monitor 5,000 automated litter bins across LA City.
Green Wire Baskets in High-Need Areas
A clean neighborhood supports public health and dignity for everyone. As part of our commitment to community care, we have deployed more than 500 specialized Green Wire Baskets into high-visibility, high-need areas. These baskets give our unsheltered neighbors experiencing homelessness an easy, accessible way to clean up their immediate surroundings. Ten specialized LASAN crews service these baskets every single day, keeping our citywide inventory accounted for and ensuring our streets stay clean between deeper scheduled washdowns.
How to Report Overflowing Public Trash Cans
Because we keep a full inventory of every public trash can, it is easy for us to find and fix problems quickly. If a bin is damaged, knocked over, or overflowing, please snap a photo and report it via the MyLA311 smartphone app, or call us directly so our crews can address it. If the bin doesn't belong to the City of Los Angeles, we will contact the appropriate organization to have the trash can serviced.
