Program Overview
Cleaner neighborhoods start with reliable data. LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN) operates the CleanStat Program to perform street-by-street assessments across the City of Los Angeles at least twice a year.
Rather than waiting for residents to submit service requests, CleanStat takes a proactive approach to identifying community cleanliness needs. By assessing street conditions regularly, we ensure that thousands of unreported items are collected and cleared from neighborhood streets when they otherwise might be overlooked.
Street Grading Scale
During each assessment, field teams evaluate street conditions and input observational data into a standardized grading formula. This formula generates a clear cleanliness score for every evaluated street block:
- Grade 1 (Clean): Minimal or no visible litter or debris.
- Grade 2 (Moderately Clean): Small amounts of loose litter or minor weeds present.
- Grade 3 (Not Clean): Heavy litter, illegal dumping, or large bulk items requiring targeted removal.
Proactive Item Cleanup
When assessments identify street debris, exact location coordinates are sent immediately to cleanup teams. LASAN collection yards and our partners at the Office of Community Beautification (OCB) review these locations to dispatch crews for fast collection and area abatement.
Items identified and removed through this program include:
- Illegal dumping and loose litter
- Mattresses and household furniture
- Electronic waste (e-waste) and appliances (white goods)
- Abandoned tires and metal items
- Shopping carts and overgrown weeds
Targeted Resource Deployment
CleanStat data helps LASAN and local Council District Offices design long-term solutions to keep LA City neighborhoods clean. By analyzing historical data trends, we strategically direct educational outreach to specific communities and place anti-dumping signage on streets with high counts of illegal dumping.
