Curbside Trash Cans and Bins: Guidelines, Repair, and Replacement

LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN) provides weekly curbside collection services for your household waste using a color-coded bin system. The LA City trash bins you receive depend on the type of dwelling you live in:

Single-Family Homes & Duplexes 

You will receive three bins for your home:

• Black bin (Refuse): One 60-gallon trash can
• Blue bin (Recyclables): One 90-gallon recycling bin
• Green bin (Organic Waste): One 90-gallon organics bin

(Note: If you keep horses on your property, you will also receive a brown bin for collecting horse manure and stable bedding). 

Multi-Family Dwellings
If your apartment or condo building is serviced by LASAN, you will receive one 60-gallon black bin and one 90-gallon blue bin per unit. Your property will also be provided with one 90-gallon green bin for organic waste, which is shared by all units on the premises.
(Note: If your multi-family building is serviced by a recycLA Service Provider, your building owner or property manager will work with you to determine the bin sizes and quantities).
 

Please place your bins by the curb before 6:00 a.m. on your scheduled collection day, and bring them back onto your property no later than 8:00 p.m. that same day.

When placing your garbage cans at the curb, follow these simple guidelines to ensure a smooth pickup:

• Keep bins 6 to 12 inches apart from each other.
• Keep bins 6 to 12 inches away from the curb, parked cars, and other solid objects.
• Ensure all lids are completely closed. If the lid does not close, the bin is too full and may not be collected.

Leaving space between the bins makes it much easier for the collection truck's automated arms to grab them, reducing the potential for damage to your bins or nearby objects!
 

When the Los Angeles rain arrives, proper bin placement is especially important! Always ensure your lids are fully closed so the bins do not fill up with rainwater. By keeping the bins 6 to 12 inches away from the curb, you allow stormwater to flow freely down the gutter without carrying your bins away.

Over time, bins can weather, crack, or lose a wheel. If your bin is broken or goes missing, LA Sanitation is happy to fix or replace it for you at no additional cost!
