Free Mulch and TOPGRO Compost

Mulch is a protective layer of material spread over your soil to retain moisture, keep roots cool, suppress weeds, and make your garden look great. LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN) "closes the loop" by taking the green waste collected from homes across the City and turning it into high-quality mulch and compost.

This material is available absolutely FREE to all City of Los Angeles residents. Just bring your own shovel and sturdy containers (or a pick-up truck), load up what you need, and take it home.
 

We offer free mulch at locations across the City. Please remember that all locations are self-serve. If you want to check if a location has run out of mulch before you go, you can call the Lopez Canyon Environmental Education Center at 818-374-7578.

We produce four different yard care products to meet your gardening needs.

• TOPGRO Premium Soil Amendment: A rich mix of composted yard trimmings, horse manure, and wood chips. Perfect for mixing intoyour existing soil to encourage root growth and hold moisture.
• TOPGRO Soil Amendment: Made from wood chips, zoo manure with bedding, and highly treated biosolids. Excellent for mixing into flower beds, vegetable gardens, and preparing seed beds.
• TOPGRO Mulch: A blend of composted yard trimmings and wood chips designed to sit on top of your soil to control erosion, abate dust, and retain moisture.
• TOPGRO Ground Yard Trimmings: Ground-up yard and tree trimmings. This is not composted and should only be used as a surface cover for weed suppression and decoration.
   

(Note: TOPGRO Premium Soil Amendment and TOPGRO Soil Amendment are available free in limited quantities at select give-away sites. Pre-packaged 25-pound bags are also available at Lopez Canyon).
 

If you are picking up mulch in bulk, one standard pick-up truck holds about one cubic yard. One cubic yard of mulch will cover a 324-square-foot area at a depth of one inch.
