Program Overview

Welcome to Project Green Leadership! At Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment (LASAN), we are building a pipeline of bright, innovative problem-solvers. Whether you are still in school looking for a Part-Time Student Engineer position or you are ready to launch your career as a full-time Environmental Engineering Associate, we have a place for you. You will work alongside our expert engineers on projects that directly benefit our local neighborhoods, keep our water clean, reduce waste, and push Los Angeles toward a sustainable future.

What to Know:

  • Two Career Paths: We hire both current students (Part-Time Student Engineers) and upcoming or recent college graduates (Full-Time Environmental Engineering Associates).

  • Great Starting Pay: Our Environmental Engineering Associates earn an annual salary starting between $97,551 and $163,887.

  • Excellent Benefits: Full-time associates receive health, dental, and vision coverage in addition to annual vacation and sick leave. The City offers an alternative work schedule, tuition reimbursement for advanced degrees, professional engineering review courses to support earning a PE license in CA, and career development through numerous training and conference participation.

  • Apply Before You Graduate: You don't have to wait for your diploma! You can apply for the associate position if you are within nine months of graduating.

What You'll Do

Every day brings a new challenge! Depending on your role, you will help us protect the environment in various ways:

  • Part-Time Student Engineers: You will step out of the classroom to collect environmental data, assist with hydraulic modeling, team up with local agencies, and support community sustainability projects.

  • Environmental Engineering Associates: You will take on professional engineering work focused on water supply, water quality control, wastewater collection and treatment, solid resources, and more. You will also conduct important planning and research studies to support our various programs.

Who Can Apply

We are looking for passionate individuals ready to make a difference. Here is what you need for our full-time career path:

For Environmental Engineering Associates:

  • You must graduate from an accredited four-year college or university with an engineering degree. And your coursework must include at least 12 semester units or 18 quarter units of environmental engineering classes. 

  • Alternatively, you can qualify if you possess a valid Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate recognized by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.

  • You must have a valid Class C driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of your appointment.

  • Student Engineers: Submit applications to san.jobapplications@lacity.org, Attn: Ani - Student Engineer. Please include a recent copy of unofficial school transcripts (no older than one semester/quarter) as well as a cover letter that lists the LASAN programs you are interested in and why you would be a good fit for them.

  • Environmental Engineering Associates: Your examination will consist entirely of a professional interview! To apply, make an appointment through your school's placement office to interview with our City of Los Angeles recruiters when we visit your campus or look for us on your university job portal (Handshake) You must be within 9 months of graduation on the day of the interview. 

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for the Associate position if I haven't graduated yet?

Yes! Applicants who are within nine months of graduation from an accredited university are welcome to apply.

Do you accept graduate students for the Environmental Engineering Associate position?

Yes! Graduate students are encouraged to apply to the Environmental Engineering Associate position as long as they meet the eligibility requirements. 

Do we need previous work experience for the Environmental Engineering Associate position?

No, however previous work experience (paid or unpaid) is valuable and will be considered during candidate evaluation. 

Is the Student Engineer Program full-time or part-time?

The Student Engineer program is part-time (no more than 980 hours should be granted per year). This usually translates to about 20 hours of work per week. Since this is an exempt position there are no benefits provided with employment. Hours are flexible and can be increased during periods such as summer breaks.

Do I need my Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate immediately?

If you are hired without one, new appointees must obtain their Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certificate within three years to successfully complete their temporary training period.
