Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant operations staff will perform urgent, unplanned electrical maintenance beginning early Friday, May 8. The work will impact operations of the Digester Gas Utilization Project (DGUP) facility.
The DGUP Facility will shut down starting at 4:00 AM on Friday, 5/8/26. This is necessary to allow electricians to perform the urgently needed bus switching. This interruption is anticipated to last until approximately 10:00 AM.
What is the DGUP Facility?
The DGUP facility converts 7.5 million cubic feet of biogenic digester gas produced daily at the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant (HWRP) in Los Angeles, California to electricity and steam which is used as the primary renewable fuel source to meet the Plant’s power and heating demands.
What Is Bus Switching and Why is it Necessary?
There are two main power lanes (or, “buses”) which supply electricity to DGUP and other Plant facilities. In order to address an urgent electrical maintenance need in one of these lanes, it is necessary to “bus switch” which diverts DGUP’s power to the backup lane.

What to Expect
During this repair period, Boiler 2 will come online at 4:00 AM using digester gas, and any excess gas will be flared until the DGUP restarts. Both Boiler 2 and the flares will return to standby once the DGUP facility is back online.
You may notice increased flaring activity (visible flame and heat) between 4:00 AM and 10:00 AM. All other plant operations will continue as normal.
