Christmas Tree Recycling

LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN) gives Christmas trees a second life by mulching them and providing the mulch free to City of LA residents. Please follow the guidelines below to recycle your tree safely and correctly.

Important Preparation Rules

Before recycling your tree (Curbside or Drop-off), you must:

  1. Remove all decorations: Ornaments, tinsel, lights, and stands.
  2. No artificial materials: Flocked (snow-covered) trees and artificial trees cannot be recycled. Place these in your Black Bin (trash).

Option 1: Curbside Collection

Convenient collection on your regular trash day prior to January 31.

How to place your tree:

  • Option A (Inside Bin): Cut the tree into sections and place them inside your green compost bin.
  • Option B (Next to Bin): If the tree is too big to cut or you’re unable to cut the tree, simply place the entire tree on the curb next to your green bin.

If it is after January 31 OR if your tree is more than 6 feet tall, you will need to schedule a bulky item pickup:

  1. Phone: Call the 24-hour Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489.

  2. Online: Visit MYLA311 and select "Item Pickups".

Multi-Family Residential Buildings:

Residents in apartments or condos should place bare trees curbside on their neighborhood's scheduled collection day. This applies whether you are serviced by LASAN or a recycLA Service Provider.

Option 2: Drop-Off Locations

Bring your bare tree (no decorations/stands) to any of the locations below.
