Hyperion Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) Pilot Facility

The Hyperion Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) Pilot Facility is a pioneering joint effort between LA Sanitation and Environment (LASAN) and the LA Department of Water and Power (LADWP). This facility represents a critical step in the Pure Water Los Angeles (PWLA) Program, which aims to transform the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant (HWRP) into a world-class water purification facility.

The Pilot Facility is a localized testing center located at the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant. Its primary goal is to test advanced treatment technologies to ensure they can effectively and safely turn wastewater into high-quality recycled water for potable reuse (water that can eventually augment our drinking water supplies).

The facility tests a three-stage advanced purification process:

• Membrane Bioreactor (MBR): Combines biological treatment with microscopic membrane filtration to remove pathogens and suspended solids.
• Reverse Osmosis (RO): A purification process that removes dissolved solids, organic compounds, and remaining contaminants at the molecular level.
• Ultraviolet/Advanced Oxidation Process (UV/AOP): Provides a final level of disinfection, inactivating any remaining pathogens and oxidizing residual chemical constituents.

The project compares systems from three major global vendors—DuPont Water Solutions, Veolia, and Kovalus Separation Solutions—to determine the most efficient technology for Los Angeles.
