Hyperion Advanced Water Purification Facility (HAWPF)

The Hyperion Advanced Water Purification Facility (HAWPF) is a joint effort between LA Sanitation and Environment (LASAN) and the LA Department of Water and Power (LADWP). The HAWPF is a cornerstone of Los Angeles’ commitment to a sustainable and resilient water future. As the "proof of concept" for the ambitious Pure Water Los Angeles program, this facility demonstrates how we can transform wastewater into a high-quality, reliable resource for our city. 

The project was delivered using a Progressive Design Build contract managed by LASAN. With construction management support from the Bureau of Engineering and inspection and compliance support from the Bureau of Contract Administration. The Contract was awarded in May of 2019 to Walsh Construction with Brown and Caldwell as the design engineer. Construction of this project was completed in July 2023, and water production began in April 2025.

The HAWPF is an advanced treatment facility located at the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant that produces 1.5 million gallons of highly purified recycled water every day.

While most wastewater was historically treated and discharged into the ocean, the HAWPF captures that water and puts it through a rigorous, multi-stage purification process to make it safe for a variety of uses such as non-potable use at Hyperion and at the Los Angeles International Airport for cooling water and toilet flushing.

To ensure the highest water quality, the HAWPF utilizes three world-class treatment technologies:

• Membrane Bioreactor (MBR): Uses microscopic filters to remove suspended solids and bacteria.
• Reverse Osmosis (RO): Forces water through semi-permeable membranes to remove salts, viruses, and chemical contaminants.
• Ultraviolet Advanced Oxidation (UV-AOP): Uses powerful UV light and oxidation to destroy any remaining trace organic compounds.

This process creates "advanced treated" water that meets strict regulatory standards for non-potable reuse and serves as a model for future drinking water applications.
 

The success of the HAWPF is the first step toward the Pure Water Los Angeles goal: recycling 100% of the city’s wastewater. By proving these technologies work at scale, we are paving the way for a multi-billion-dollar transformation that will eventually provide enough purified water to meet nearly 50% of Los Angeles' total water demand.

We believe in transparency and community engagement. HAWPF features public educational signage and a visitor area designed to show residents exactly how their water is being managed and protected.
