Project Overview

At LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN), we are building new equalization tanks at the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant (DCTWRP) in the San Fernando Valley. This project adds 8 million gallons of water storage to keep our water treatment systems working smoothly around the clock. By keeping the flow steady, we help create reliable recycled water for our community as part of our commitment to Zero Waste, Zero Wasted Water.

How the Tanks Work

Water use across the City of Los Angeles changes throughout the day. During daytime hours, more wastewater enters our plants. At night, that flow drops significantly.

The purification processes at the Advanced Water Purification Facility (AWPF) require a constant, steady flow to operate at their best. Our new equalization tanks solve this challenge:

  • Daytime (High Flow): The tanks collect excess water during busy hours.
  • Nighttime (Low Flow): The tanks release stored water so treatment never slows down.

With a constant flow, the facility can treat 23 million gallons per day (MGD) of incoming water and deliver 19 MGD of clean, purified product water back to our city.

Partnering for Water Resilience

We are working closely with our project partner, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). Together, we are investing in local water infrastructure to reduce our dependence on imported water and protect our local environment for generations to come.
