The Central Los Angeles Recycling and Transfer Station (CLARTS) is a 9.14-acre City facility located in industrial Downtown Los Angeles near the 9th Street junction. Purchased by LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN) in April 2004, CLARTS serves as a vital consolidation hub where neighborhood trash and yard trimmings collected across the City are temporarily stored before being loaded into larger trucks for efficient long-haul transport to regional landfills and processing centers.
CLARTS is open to commercial waste haulers, independent operators, and City of Los Angeles residents.
Overview
At LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN), we operate transfer stations to keep our neighborhood collection trucks efficient and on schedule. Because the City of Los Angeles no longer operates active landfills within city limits, collection trucks bring household waste to CLARTS to be consolidated. Transferring waste into high-capacity transport trailers reduces vehicle trips, lowers roadway emissions, and saves taxpayer dollars.
Public Usage Permitted - Rates & Payment
CLARTS accepts municipal solid waste and bulky items from permitted commercial haulers, independent contractors, and local residents.
- Municipal Solid Waste (Standard Trash): $103.00 per ton (1-ton minimum charge)
- Hard-to-Handle / Special Bulky Items: $113.00 per ton (1-ton minimum charge)
- Payment Methods: All major credit cards are accepted. Rates are subject to change.
Safety Guidelines
Safety is our top priority at all LASAN facilities. Because CLARTS is an active industrial loading facility with heavy machinery, all visitors and drivers must follow strict site rules:
- Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): You must bring and wear your own hard hat and high-visibility safety vest at all times while on site.
- Speed Limits: Obey all posted facility speed limits and traffic directions from scale operators.
Prohibited Materials
For public health and environmental safety, CLARTS does not accept hazardous materials, liquids, or construction debris.
The following items are strictly prohibited at CLARTS:
- Appliances & scrap metal
- Asphalt, concrete, dirt, & gravel
- Automotive batteries & tires
- Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste
- Electronic Waste (E-waste)
- Hazardous, medical, or infectious waste
- Liquid waste of any kind, sewage sludge, or septic tank pumping
