The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which will be a venue for the 2028 Summer Olympics, has become the oldest certified member of Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment’s (LASAN) Los Angeles Green Business Program (LAGBP) at 103 years old. The certification highlights the LA Coliseum’s zero-waste initiatives ahead of the 2028 Olympics.

As the second-largest stadium in the United States, the LA Coliseum demonstrates eco-conscious leadership of Los Angeles’ goal to reduce 75% of organic and food waste in landfills by 2030.

“Our commitment to zero-waste and sustainability at the LA Coliseum extends to our commitment to the communities affected beyond this space,” said Matthew Buswell, Director of Stadium Operations & Sustainability, of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. “We’re grateful to be in partnership with the Los Angeles Green Business Program to have the tools and network to continue our commitment.”

The LA Coliseum shifted to compostable products in order to curb waste, diverting over 1,600 tons of waste from landfills collected at events throughout the year.

As one of the most sustainable venues in the country, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum also stands as a leader of what is possible in major cities across the U.S. With the LA Olympics approaching in 2028, this helps amplify LA’s successful waste management practices for national and global audiences.

“We are excited to have one of Los Angeles’ most notable institutions fighting alongside LASAN in the journey to sustainability in Los Angeles,” said Joone Kim-Lopez, Executive Director and General Manager of LASAN. “Institutions such as these help to further Los Angeles’ commitment to a clean, green LA.”

The Los Angeles Green Business Program offers eco-conscious leaders across Los Angeles tools for sustainability across energy, pollution prevention, solid waste, transportation, water and wastewater. Each business leader has the chance to navigate these with a team of committed LASAN leaders and those within the LAGBP network.
